Day 90 Thursday 14th September
We drove about 200kms today to the town of St George,
situated on the banks of the Balonne River. The road here was pretty quiet but
the amount of road kill was phenomenal. Hundreds of roos and wallabies, the odd
emu and wild pig and even a very unlucky echidna. We also saw about 6 large
feral cats that had obviously been caught by a farmer, strung up on a long bar!
After lunch we went for a walk along the river and then drove around on a
self-guided heritage tour. Rob went off to get some groceries and fuel and I
visited an amazing place called “The Unique Egg”. I was completely blown away
by the handcarved illuminated emu eggs, all beautifully displayed in a darkened
room with mirrors behind each egg. The artist Steve Margaritis, has been
carving the eggs for more than 60 years. This is a private collection and he
doesn’t sell them. They have been displayed at world expos and given as special
gifts to important people, including Barak Obama. The emu eggs vary in colour
depending on where the emu is from that laid the egg. Most of the eggs were
illuminated with a normal light globe but in a few he put a coloured globe.
These were pretty spectacular.
