Day 89 Wednesday 13th September
We travelled
a short distance (87kms) from Roma to the small town of Mitchell, named after
the famous explorer. We found a beautiful free-camp on the banks of the Maranoa
River at the Neil Turner weir. We went into town and checked out the
court-house museum where we learnt all about the 1902 the arrest and trial of
Patrick and James Kenniff who were bushrangers that were accused of murdering a
police constable and a station owner. After lunch we visited the Great Artesian
Spa for a swim and a soak. This aquatic centre has 2 pools. One has water that
comes straight out of the great artesian basin and the temperature was about 38
degrees. They also had a cool pool too and seeing the air temperature was
around 34 degrees we swapped between the two. It was a very relaxing and
enjoyable experience and I think we appreciated it even more when we heard that
the maximum temperature in Adelaide was only 14 today!
PS (Rob) AS we went bed we could see a thunder storm on the horizon (spectacular lightning) and an hour later the storm passed through. Though brief it was the rain we had that was worrying, would we be able to drive out in the morning? All good, as the rain only settled the dust!
