Day 88 Tuesday 12th September
We were up
early this morning to ensure we wouldn’t miss a free tour of Australia’s largest
cattle selling centre, the Roma Saleyards. Today 6,000 head of cattle were to
be sold and the centre can sell up to 14,000. We learnt so much about how the
saleyards work and enjoyed watching and listening to the auctioneers. Today was
a “store sale” where the cattle are purchased for fattening or to breed from.
Nearly all of the cattle have an electronic ear tag for their life. This allows
the cattle to be tracked wherever they go. The tours are held every Tuesday and
Thursday (April to October) as the cattle are sold on these days. After this
tour Rob dropped me off at the magnificent St Pauls church in Roma. I had a
guided tour through the church and saw 50 magnificent window panels. 39 were
stained glass windows some dating back to 1876 and the rest were leadlight
windows. All the windows had been donated over the years from parishioners as
memorials to family members. After lunch Rob and I did a walk around the Roma
Bush Gardens, set around a large dam that was once used to supply water to the train
steam engines.
