Day 81 Tuesday 5th September
A day on
Great Keppel Island was our plan for today and we had perfect weather for this
activity. We drove to the Roslyn Bay wharf at Yeppoon and caught the Fast Cat
Ferry over to Great Keppel Island. The journey only took 30 minutes and the sea
was fairly calm. We had brilliant blue skies too! We arrived at a beautiful
sweeping bay with pristine white sands. It was very quiet and we were sharing
the beach with only a few others. We called into the beachside shack and had a
coffee before walking down to a rocky outcrop at one end of the bay. We had
brought our snorkelling gear and so spent nearly an hour in the warm water,
just off the beach. Although there were only a few bright pieces of coral there
were many different varieties of fish, coloured and patterned in beautiful ways
and a huge number of sea cucumbers or sea slugs. After this lovely swim and snorkel,
we strolled back to the bistro area. We passed a huge resort area that had been
fenced off and was under repair. The repairs didn’t even looked like they had
started and it was a sad sight. The building was probably damaged during a
cyclone earlier this year. We had a lovely lunch at the bistro and walked back
to the beach area again. The time passed so quickly and it was soon time to
return to the mainland. The tide was way out so we passengers were ferried out
to the Fast Cat Ferry via a smaller glass-bottom boat. The wind was up for the
return journey but it didn’t worry us too much as we were travelling in the
same direction. An extra bonus was the sighting of 2 whales on the way back. It
was a truly wonderful day.
