Day 80 Monday 4th September
Today we travelled
to the rather large town of Rockhampton. It wasn’t a long trip and we were
settled into our park before lunch. We decided to go to the Information centre
to check out any possible activities. From here we went into the city and
stopped for lunch. I went for a walk along the quay area next to the Fitzroy
River. This area had some magnificent old buildings that were all well
restored. There was a sculpture displaying the various heights the river had
reached during floods. Clearly, many of these buildings would have suffered some
degree of flooding over the years. We also went for a drive to some magnificent
lookouts at the top of Mt Archer. The
views were pretty good but once again the smoke haze from various fire around
the district prevented us from seeing further. The TV news spoke about the fact
that it was extremely concerning that various fires have broken out in the
area. It has been extremely dry and also unseasonably warm during this Queensland
winter. We won’t complain about the weather as it was sunny and 31 degrees here
and 13 degrees in Adelaide!
