Day 79 Sunday 3rd September
We left
Sarina and had a short and easy drive to St Lawrence, a small town a few
kilometres off the Bruce Highway and located close to the coast and extensive
wetlands. We had read about the campsites here. There is no power but for $10
you can stay at the showgrounds which have beautiful, clean showers and toilets
and gas barbeques etc. We set up and walked into town for a quick look around.
Being Sunday, it was fairly quiet all around. We drove to the old meat works
which closed down in 1923, checked out the boat-ramp and cemetery and then went
to a park on the St Lawrence Creek which had some interesting information about
the railway bridge which had recently been up-graded. The tides here were
pretty big, 7metres! I then went for a walk to the beautiful wetlands. I spent
quite a bit of time in the bird-hide, watching the huge numbers of different
species of birds feeding, swimming and messing around in the wetlands. Later in
the afternoon we visited the pub. A small, typical country pub. We talked to
some locals and another couple who were travellers too. The woman was telling
me about her teddy bear collection which she had in her caravan as it was
easier to take the bears with her rather than leave them home. Apparently they
are usually stored in the caravan. She showed me quite a few of them.
