Day 67 Tuesday 22nd August
A fairly easy drive today from Mena Creek to Cardwell. We travelled part of this
along the old Bruce Highway and then met up with the Bruce Highway proper. Many
of the cane fields were a hive of activity as sugar cane was being cut by the
huge harvesters and then carted in the mini carriages of the sugar cane trains.
We passed at least 2 sugar mills during our trip. We had a short break in Tully
(the wettest town in Australia) but being winter and therefore the dry season
there was no sign of rain. We went for a drive to the Cardwell lookout where we
got great views of the magnificent Hinchinbrook Island which is just off the
coast of Cardwell. Unfortunately you can’t swim from the beach here due to the
presence of salt-water crocodiles. We went looking for some but didn’t sight
any. Our drive into the nearby forest to
look for swimming holes and cool creeks was a little disappointing as due to
the lack of any rain over the past few months most of the water-holes were
stagnant and not suitable for swimming even if we had wanted to.
