Day 61 Wednesday 16th August
A Big Day
Out! Rather than
moving the van 50kms down the road we decided to drive to some of the wonderful
attractions on the Atherton Tablelands. We headed out and our first stop was
Malanda to visit more falls. We also did a short walk that followed a river
into the rainforest. We saw quite a few turtles swimming in the river too. From
here we drove to 2 volcanic crater lakes, Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine. Lake
Barrine had beautiful, old tearooms and guest houses that were built in the
1920’s. We stopped here and enjoyed a Devonshire morning tea. We also visited 2
huge kauri trees growing nearby. From there were drove on to see two
spectacular fig trees. One was called the Cathedral Fig Tree and the other the
Curtain Fig Tree. These amazing fig trees grow huge and usually end up
strangling the host tree. We went onto a large lake, Lake Tinaroo and found a
great place to stop for lunch right on the banks of the lake. Rob was interested
in the dam wall and while we were there it was exciting to see a large amount
of water being released through a pipe. We travelled back through the small
town of Tolga stopping at a “high end” timber gallery, stocked with stunning
pieces of artworks, particularly beautiful timber pieces. Continuing on through
Atherton and the historical town of Herberton, we arrived back at Millaa Millaa
just before dinnertime!
