Day 55 Thursday 10th August
We left the
van in the caravan park and headed out the 60 odd kilometres to Porcupine Gorge National Park. We got a pretty early start and arrived at the first lookout before 9.30am. We were treated with spectacular views of the Gorge from a platform. Being early in the morning, the long sides of the gorge caused shadows to hang over into the base 120 metres below and it was a little dark. We had read that the best time to view the scenery from this lookout was later in the day and so we decided to return later. We travelled on to the Pyramid Campground and day parking area. The first walk we attempted was the Gorge walk via the Pyramid Lookout. The scenery here was quite beautiful and reminded us quite a bit of Karijini National Park in WA. It took us just over 2 hours to complete the walk down into the base of the Gorge, walking along the flat rocky platform both upstream and downstream and then returning up out of the Gorge. The hardest part for me was going down into the Gorge and for Rob, coming back out of the Gorge but we did it and we were pretty pleased with ourselves. After an early lunch we decided we couldn’t leave without doing the Rim walk. This walk was a little easier and only took us an hour to do. It rewarded us with an impressive lookout at the turnaround point. Once we’d completed this walk we headed back to the main lookout we had visited earlier in the day and were now rewarded with even more stunning views. Well worth the effort to get there!
