Day 54 Wednesday 9th August
The drive
from Cloncurry to Hughendon was relatively uneventful except for a road train accident
about 60kms out from Cloncurry. The road train had 3 trailers on it and Rob
thought they looked like empty fuel containers of some sort. The back trailer
was still the right way up but on the road, the middle trailer was on an angle
half off the road and the trailer closest to the prime mover had turned over on
its side completely and was in the drain off the road. The truck driver had
moved the prime mover (which looked like it had not suffered any damage) about
30 metres up the road. He had put out warning triangles around the trailer that
was still on the road and was obviously waiting for help to arrive. It looked
like a crane would have been needed to right the trailer. They would have had
to close the road off to do this so we felt fortunate to have got through
before the rescue vehicles had arrived. The road was not the best of roads we’d
been on considering it was sealed. Very bumpy and many ups and downs. We
arrived in Hughendon in the early afternoon and spent a few hours exploring the
town which is again famous for its dinosaur discovery. We stopped in at the F J
Holden café for a cool drink which was most interesting as it had and extensive
display of Holden car memorabilia.
