Day 53 Tuesday 8th August
We sadly said
goodbye to Rick, Kerry and Corella Dam. We had stayed there for a week which
was much longer than we thought we would. We only travelled 65kms to Cloncurry
and started to do our washing as soon as we arrived. In town, we visited the
bakery for lunch (a great place that many people had told us about) and then
did a large grocery shop. Later in the afternoon I visited the Cloncurry museum
while Rob did a few little repair jobs around the van. The museum was very good
with a large section dedicated to the Burke and Wills expedition and another
all about the history of Mary Kathleen and the uranium mine. In the early days,
Cloncurry was at first a gold mining area and then copper mining became more
important. Mining is still important but it’s now a centre for the cattle
industry with the largest sale yards in north-west Queensland. We visited the
main dam for Cloncurry which was very picturesque and some very old Chinese
graves. We treated ourselves to a lovely dinner at a hotel/motel which was
across the road from the caravan park.
