Day 32 Tuesday 18th July
We had a
wonderful day today that involved quite a bit of travelling but was well worth
it. We travelled from Winton the 110kms. to Lark Quarry Conservation Park. Here
we did a tour to view the Dinosaur Stampede National Monument. This area was
formed 95 million years ago when a heard of at least 150 small 2-legged
dinosaurs, some the size of chickens and others slightly larger were at the
edge of a lake, drinking. A very large theropod (Tyrannosauropus) came along
looking for a meal and the smaller dinosaurs scattered leaving their footprints
in the wet sand. A particular series of events meant that the prints were
fossilised and left for us to see. The first one was discovered in 1966 and
further investigations continued over the years. The beautiful centre we
visited was built in 2002. We felt very special to have been able to visit this
place. Once we returned to Winton we visited a few more unusual places in this
town. The first was the Musical Wall where we enjoyed trying to play the many funny
instruments made from junk. We then visited “Arnos Wall”, a very funny looking
wall built by the resident and filled with rocks, cement and junk….There was
even a kitchen sink in the wall. From here
we went to the very unusual North Gregory Hotel. This hotel had been rebuilt 3
times over the years due to fires. The last time being in 1955. It had an “art
deco” feel about it with 5 etched window panels in doors done by an artist in
the building. We had a couple of drinks
here and then went out to the beer garden area to watch the famous and funny chook
races. It was a hoot!
