Day 28 Friday 14th July
We left
Longreach today and headed back south towards Ilfracombe as we had found an
interesting place on a river that according to many people who use Wiki Camps,
was a lovely spot. I was hopeful I could put the kayak in! It is called Oma
Waterhole and is quite famous for a fishing competition which is going to be
held at the end of the month. Apparently Oma Waterhole is the home of
“Yellow-Belly”…..whatever that is. At Ilfracombe we turned and headed towards a
tiny town called Isisford. We stopped in at the council chambers, paid our
camping fee and received directions to the camping area. We stopped at a
lovely, little café for coffee before heading out. Our camping area is along
the banks of the Barcoo River. There are toilets and showers but no power and
you need to bring your own water. There are probably about 20 other campers
along the river but we are all separated by quite a large area. We set up on
the banks of the river and after lunch Rob helped me put the kayak in. It was a
bit tricky due to the very soft bank and I did manage to sink into the mud on
my return. I had a very relaxing peaceful kayak, occasionally talking to the
people fishing on the bank. I probably spent well over an hour on the river.
Rob had been collecting firewood and we had a beautiful fire at night while
admiring the gorgeous night sky.
