Day 19 Wednesday 5th July
We left
Charleville reasonably early this morning travelling through the towns of
Augathella and Tambo and stopping in both for a walk down the main street and a
look around. At our morning tea stop which was at a nice roadside stop in the
middle of nowhere, a young police officer in his 4WD pulled up to use the
facilities. Rob offered him a coffee but he said he was fine. We had a lovely
chat to him. He had been in Charleville to do a course on Tuesday and was
heading back to Tambo to report for duty. We chatted to him about various
things for 10 minutes or so. Later at our lunch stop we chatted to a husband
and wife truck driver team. They were pulling 3 large trailers and were very
happy to chat while we had lunch. We arrived in Blackall and left the van in a
caravan park located behind the pub. We then drove a few kms. out of town to
the “Blackall Woolscour”. This woolscour operated from 1908 until 1978 and is
heritage listed. It is the only steam-driven scour incorporating a shearing
board, left in Australia. We were given a guided tour of the area and also saw
the scour operating, being driven from a steam engine. Even Rob thought that
this was an excellent tour and so much part of our history. After this we
visited the famous “Black Stump” located back in the town. We are now…”Beyond
the Black Stump”!
