Day 15 Saturday 1st July
What an
exciting day we’ve had! We left Cunnamulla and headed for the small town of
Eulo. We pulled up and had trouble finding a spot due the other 20 or so 4WD
vehicles and caravans or camper trailers. We went for a short walk and found out
that this is area was famous for artesian mud baths, opals and dinosaurs and
megafauna like diprotodons. They had a large replica of a diprotodon in the
main street. From here we drove to a very famous place….Thargomindah. This town
was the first place in Australia and third in the world behind London and Paris
to produce hydro-electric power for street lighting. They harnessed the bore
water of the Great Artesian basin in 1891. Lighting or the town was connected
daily from 5.30pm to 11.30pm. This method of power operation continued until
1951, when people in the town wanted house lighting and the hydro-power was
replaced with diesel generators. There was a really interesting display in the
town explaining all this and the hydro-power plant is still workable. We
continued on and Rob had to have his wits about him as he encountered unsealed
roads and the sealed sections of the road were very narrow. He also had to look
out for emus, kangaroos, cattle and horses who were all crossing the road at
various times. We arrived at Quilpie and managed to squeeze into the very
popular caravan park here. It is totally booked out with many people heading to
the Birdsville Big Red Bash, a family friendly music festival that is on from
the 4th-7th of July. Once we’d finished setting up the
van we headed to the spa area. This park has 3 large spas fed by the hot
artesian water. We thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing spa.
