Day 5 Wednesday 21st June
We were up
earlier than usual today to head out on a day trip to the Lake Mungo National
Park. Lake Mungo was about 120 Kms from Mildura but more than half of that is
dirt road. We learnt a lot today about the geology and geography of the area
and although it was not as spectacular as the Pinnacles in WA it was well worth
the visit. The Lake Mungo area was one of the first places in Australia added
to the World Heritage List. This was due to the discovery of Mungo Woman back
in 1969. She was the oldest cremated human in of the world dating back to more
than 40,000 years ago. Since then there have been further discoveries of
Aboriginal people and artefacts. This makes the Mungo area one of the oldest
places outside of Africa to have been occupied by modern humans since ancient
times. The Aboriginal people lived here for all those years as the climate
changed and the lakes dried up. We had a great day exploring many areas and
viewing the interesting landscapes. We saw many emus and kangaroos too.
Unfortunately a few had lost their lives on the road.
